Frax USD (frxUSD)
This adverse review corrects a join-key gap in this registry’s own coverage. The registry’s existing ”frax” entry, project id `frax`, joins to DefiLlama’s legacy algorithmic FRAX record. That mostly dormant, UST-depeg-era product now carries roughly $44M of TVL. It does not join to the live, custodian-backed frxUSD product that DefiLlama tracks under the separate `frax-usd` slug, currently around $111M of TVL. The registry’s own rule says a chain or project id must match the feed’s string exactly or a rejection silently no-ops. The existing ”frax” rejection therefore has not matched live frxUSD pool data at all. This entry closes that gap with the correct join key. The findings on frxUSD itself remain the same. Six ”enshrined” custodians, including BlackRock’s BUIDL, which this registry already rejected, mint and redeem it instead of one custodian holding a single reserve. No reproducible, dated, line-by-line reserve report was found. The contract’s freeze and blacklist authority reportedly has no enforced timelock, so an admin could act without delay. sfrxUSD, the separate yield-bearing wrapper with a rotating-collateral strategy, remains a distinct risk that the existing ”frax” entry rejects separately.
- A reproducible, dated, line-by-line reserve report covering every enshrined custodian and any encumbrances is published
- The freeze and blacklist admin function is placed behind an enforced timelock
- The reserve composition sheds dependency on any custodian this registry has independently rejected, or those custodians clear their own rejections
- This registry’s existing ”frax” entry is reconciled with this one so the two project ids do not present conflicting guidance on the same underlying frxUSD/sfrxUSD product family

The join-key finding
DefiLlama’s `frax-usd` protocol record, in the RWA category with the tag ”Treasury Bills,” describes itself verbatim as ”Frax USD (frxUSD)… a fully collateralized stablecoin issued by Frax Finance, combining off-chain custodians holding cash-equivalent reserves with on-chain minting and redemption mechanisms.” This is the live, current product. DefiLlama’s separate `frax` slug covers a different, largely dormant product: the legacy algorithmic FRAX stablecoin, based on AMO/Curve collateral, tied to the May 2022 UST depeg era, and currently around $44M of TVL and shrinking. This registry’s existing ”frax” memo cites sources specific to frxUSD, including docs.frax.com/protocol/assets/frxusd, but uses the wrong DefiLlama slug. This is the exact silent-no-op failure that the registry’s own rules warn about for chain ids, found here in the project id instead.
Mechanism and custodian fragmentation
frxUSD launched January 2025 as the RWA-backed successor to legacy FRAX. Governance-approved ”enshrined custodians” hold cash-equivalent reserves and mint and redeem frxUSD: BlackRock BUIDL via Securitize, Superstate USTB and USCC, Circle USDC, Agora AUSD, Centrifuge JTRSY, and WisdomTree WTGXX. The list includes BUIDL, already rejected in this registry on access grounds, and JTRSY, already rejected as Anemoy Capital. The frxUSD reserve therefore includes two of its six named custodians whose risks this registry has already reviewed and found disqualifying.
Legal structure and control
FRAX Inc, formerly Financial Reserves and Asset Exploration Inc, is a Delaware public benefit corporation responsible for compliance and collateral management, according to Frax Improvement Proposal 432. frxUSD contracts include admin functions that can freeze or blacklist addresses and halt transfers. A multisig reportedly held by the core team and compliance entity controls those functions. This design is comparable in kind to the freeze controls in USDC and USDT. One secondary source, however, states that frxUSD’s admin functions have no enforced timelock. A freeze or upgrade could therefore take effect without giving holders any time to react.
Redemption and reserve transparency
Redemption runs through the enshrined custodian network, according to Frax’s own documentation. sfrxUSD, the separate ERC-4626 yield-bearing wrapper, redeems into frxUSD with no stated unstaking fee. Neither this review nor the prior research behind the existing ”frax” entry found a reproducible, dated, line-by-line reserve report that shows balances and any encumbrances for each custodian. This review confirms that the gap remains open. An independent token review by Chaos Labs describes the design as focused on solvency overall, but says that redemption routes and the depth of exit liquidity still need improvement.
sfrxUSD and comparison
sfrxUSD’s ”Benchmark Yield Strategy” can move collateral among Ethena carry trades, DeFi AMO positions in Aave, Curve, Convex, Fraxlend, and dTrinity, and Treasury/IORB strategies. This is a different and more actively managed risk than simply holding frxUSD. The registry’s existing ”frax” entry already rejects that risk separately. This entry does not repeat that reasoning. It corrects only the join key for the base frxUSD product. Compared with USDC and USDT, frxUSD has a similar freeze-and-blacklist control pattern, but its reserves are split across six custodians, and it lacks an equally frequent and equally independent schedule of public attestations.

Inherited controls
The research above describes the protocol layer. Every position also inherits the asset it holds and the chain it settles on. The layer with the most administrative power sets the position’s effective control; that describes control, not quality or suitability.
